How to review a revised manuscript without losing the original question

A revision review asks a different question from a first read: did the change resolve the concern, and what else did it affect? Begin with the earlier evidence and the agreed scope of this round.

The short version: Verify the version, compare chapters, connect each response to revised evidence, check downstream consequences, and document what remains open. A response or a changed sentence is not automatic resolution.

Send feedback to the author

Publish only the feedback you approve. The author can reply and send the next draft for you to accept.

Read the guide

1. Agree the scope of this revision round

Confirm whether you are checking responses to existing queries, reading rewritten sections, or performing a fresh full edit. Record the deadline and what is outside the engagement. A major restructuring may need a new scope discussion rather than a silent expansion of your work.

2. Preserve and align the drafts

Keep the previously reviewed draft and identify the incoming version. Inspect chapter matching, especially after splits, merges, new scenes, or reordered material. A chapter number is a locator, not a stable identity across revisions.

3. Review query, response, and passage together

For each open query, read what prompted it, what the author says changed, and the actual revised text. If context is still missing, ask a narrower follow-up. If the author deliberately keeps a difference, record the intention rather than repeatedly flagging it as an error.

4. Follow the consequence beyond the edited sentence

A new date can alter travel time; an earlier revelation can change character knowledge; a renamed object can leave old references behind. Check the connected passages and the style sheet. Use targeted analysis where useful, but record its coverage and read beyond it where the question requires.

  • Does the local change address the original concern?
  • Does it conflict with another established fact?
  • Does the approved reference need updating?
  • What remains unresolved or outside this round’s scope?

5. Close the loop with an explicit status

Mark findings fixed, intentional, dismissed, or needing recheck according to the evidence. Send a short handoff identifying the reviewed version, coverage, resolved items, and remaining decisions. In Novilot, client submissions require your acceptance, and AI revision checks remain bounded aids rather than automatic closure.
