Import and Export
Bring your manuscript in. Export when you are ready.
Novilot is built for drafts you already have. Bring in Word, OpenDocument, EPUB, Rich Text, Markdown and Plain text, parsed in your browser, with a chapter split you check before anything is saved. Then work with continuity and analysis tools and export publish-ready files when you want to share, submit, or publish.

Long drafts should not be trapped in one format
Indie authors and revisers need a path in and a clean file out.
A manuscript already written elsewhere
The draft lives in another editor. You need it in Novilot without rebuilding chapters by hand.
Chapter soup after paste
A single block of text is hard to navigate until headings become a real chapter list, and a wrong split is worse than none.
Export that agents and stores expect
When you leave the app, you need DOCX, EPUB, or PDF that is ready to share or submit.
Continuity after import
Bringing the file in only matters if you can then audit and build canon from what is on the page.
How import and export work
Upload or paste. Check the chapter split. Export when you are ready.
- 1
Upload .docx, .odt, .epub, .rtf, .md, .txt, or paste
Novilot reads Word, OpenDocument, EPUB, Rich Text, Markdown and Plain text. Parsing happens in your browser, so the file itself never has to leave your machine.
- 2
Review the chapters before anything is saved
Chapters are detected from common heading patterns, then shown to you to rename, merge, split, or drop. Nothing is created until you accept the split.
- 3
Work on the draft in Novilot
Run Continuity Guardian, approve story bible entries, and revise with analysis tools on the imported book.
- 4
Export DOCX, EPUB, or PDF
Leave with a publish-ready file whenever you need a copy outside the app.
After import, keep the draft consistent
Questions, answered plainly
Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt), EPUB, Rich Text (.rtf), Markdown, and plain text, or paste the manuscript straight in. Full list: .docx, .odt, .epub, .rtf, .md, .txt.
No. Your file is read in your own browser and only the extracted prose is sent, so a 30 MB .docx full of images imports fine, and a manuscript you decide not to import was never sent anywhere at all.
Yes. Import shows you the chapters it found and lets you rename, merge, split, or drop them before anything is created. Nothing is written until you accept.
Word's older .doc and Apple Pages are different formats that browser-side parsers do not handle reliably. Novilot recognises them by name and tells you to export a .docx first, rather than failing with a parse error you cannot act on.
Export publish-ready DOCX, EPUB, or PDF with clean formatting suited to submissions and KDP-style workflows.
No. Chapters are detected from common heading patterns so you can navigate the draft. Your words stay yours.
Yes. Your writing is yours. Novilot never uses your manuscript to train AI models.
