Evidence before interpretation
Every useful continuity question begins with what the manuscript actually says. A finding should identify the chapters, quote the relevant lines, explain the possible disagreement, and leave room for context the scan may not understand.
That evidence-first structure lets an editor reject weak findings quickly and spend attention on contradictions that warrant a note or author query.
Common continuity categories
Continuity is broader than eye color. In complex fiction, editors often need to trace who knew what, whether enough time passed, whether an object changed hands, and whether a later solution violates an earlier world rule.
- Character appearance, age, injury, name, role, or allegiance
- Dates, seasons, travel time, event order, and elapsed time
- Relationships, meetings, promises, secrets, and knowledge states
- Locations, possessions, access rules, technology, or magic constraints
The editor remains the adjudicator
Two passages can differ without contradicting each other. A character may lie, a narrator may be unreliable, a rule may have an exception, or the story may intentionally withhold context. Novilot should raise the question; the editor determines the reading.
