AI and your writing
Putting a novel into an AI tool is a real decision, and writers are right to ask hard questions before they do it. Here are the answers, including where the limits are.
Your writing is never used to train a model
Not by us, and not by Anthropic, whose API Novilot runs on. Their commercial terms forbid training on API traffic, and we do not do it either. Your manuscript is not a dataset, it is your book.
Chapters are sent to that API when you use a feature that needs to read them, and are used only to produce the result you asked for. Full detail lives in our privacy policy.
Novilot reads. You write.
Almost everything here is analysis: continuity checking, story bible building, pacing, character arcs, structure. It reads what you wrote and tells you what it found. The prose stays yours.
Where the app can suggest text, it never applies anything on its own. Copilot edits arrive as a proposal you Apply or Dismiss. Autocomplete is a suggestion you accept with a keypress, it can be switched off in the toolbar, and on a brand-new project it starts off, because a first draft should be allowed to be rough.
What publishers actually require
Amazon KDP draws the line at AI-generated content: text, images or translations produced by an AI tool, which must be disclosed to Amazon when you publish. It treats AI-assisted work differently, meaning help with ideas, structure, grammar and feedback on writing that is yours. That does not require disclosure, and it is the side Novilot's analysis tools sit on.
Policies vary by publisher, agent and competition, several are stricter than Amazon, and they are still moving. If you use the drafting features rather than the analysis ones, check the rules wherever you are submitting. We would rather say that than pretend the question is settled.
Your book can always leave
Export the whole manuscript at any time as DOCX, EPUB, PDF, HTML or Markdown, plus your story bible and notes. You can connect a GitHub repository and have Novilot back your work up there, so a copy lives somewhere we do not control. Delete your account and the content goes with it, permanently.
Where the model runs
Novilot uses Anthropic's Claude models over their API. We tested local models during development and the quality was not there for continuity work over a whole novel. If that changes, the model is a swappable part of the system: the story graph Novilot builds from your book is ours, not the model's.
